Predictive Maintenance: First, be Proactive!

What is Predictive Maintenance?

Predictive maintenance is a set of practices and techniques that focus on monitoring the performance and condition of equipment during normal operation to learn their behavior and begin to predict failure and prevent future failures through corrective maintenance.

Why is it important? Industrial organizations are required to become more efficient in all aspects of their business to remain competitive and in turn must focus on their practices and production processes, of which they have the most control over, in comparison to costly external variables. This is the area where they have the ownership and ability to make the strongest impact on operating availability, efficiencies, and target cost of goods sold.

How Do Sensors Play a Role?

Sensors play a substantial role in predictive maintenance because they are the critical piece in moving from a reactive maintenance strategy to being proactive. Sensors are critical to understanding the asset health of all mission-critical equipment, not just the often limited or partial view of core equipment hardwired to the control systems in place. Sensors can be used to fill information gaps in partially monitored assets or equipment assets that currently lack monitoring so that data can be collected to continually monitor and analyze data trends, and overall asset health.

Why is this important?  It’s simple: Predictive maintenance CANNOT exist without condition monitoring.

It’s easy to get caught up in the desire to move your maintenance processes from preventive to predictive but the reality is that it’s not possible to move from reactive to predictive, without first taking the necessary steps from reactive to proactive. This leads to the outstanding question many organizations struggle with: How?

Before being lured into high cost, multi-year strategies that focus on complex and limiting, predictive data science, it’s important to first leverage a rapidly growing ecosystem of highly reliable commodity sensors, the use of open software standards, and the flexible technologies that support that bring this data to life in meaningful ways to drive short term visibility into your assets and the supporting ROI. This is how data is quickly generated and maximized to make crucial process decisions and attack the short term challenges that will enable a move to predictive maintenance over time.

The Sentrics Solution

Sentrics’ mission is to enable more actionable insights from your sensor investments. Leveraging our cloud-based platform, we collect, analyze, and interpret data from single or connected sensor networks. With organizations critical business challenges in mind, Sentrics enables organizations to take the critical steps in the direction of predictive maintenance through sensor analytics by:

  • Collecting the most relevant data from live sensor networks to better understand operation conditions
  • Analyzing asset health by deciphering trends and detecting anomalies in real-time
  • Automating real-time warnings and alerts with insights into mission-critical operations systems

Getting more action out of your sensor data is critical and many organizations need to best understand how to get started effectively. Sentrics services those who are looking to take that critical step, and begin the shift from reactive to proactive in their maintenance strategies.
